Beginning in 2001, as an outgrowth of a series of larger assemblages, I took on the challenge of working in extreme miniature scale with a series of what I call the Theaters of the Thirteenth Dimension. My challenge was to create a tiny three dimensional space that could work on the same formal level that conventional full scale art does. It would have to succeed in the traditional constructs of color, composition, and subject matter but at the smallest scale allowable given those constraints.
The scale of the theaters is 3" W x 4.75"D x 4.5"H, small enough to fit in the palm of one's hand. Because of the tiny scale, only one person at a time may view a work. The experience is intimate and empowering. Not unlike the feeling one may have had as a child comparing one's own small size, to the much smaller size of one's toys.
The subject matter of the theaters is engaging, narrative and dramatic, much like a large scale theatrical production. Subjects range from relationships, love, loss, women's issues, hope, disappointment, the tragedy of war, the search for spirituality and peace, death, recovery, and cycles of change, to name but a few.
My theaters provide a stage on which my visual dramas are composed. Like creating theater, I take into account lighting effects, set design, and the cast of characters. Each one is a unique creation that comes to life each time it's viewed.
